The Challenge
The MacArthur Business District is one of Long Island’s most strategically positioned employment centers, anchored by Long Island MacArthur Airport and home to approximately 3,500 businesses and nearly 40,000 jobs. Despite its significant economic role, the District lacked a unified strategic vision, a coordinated identity, and a clear framework to guide future investment and growth.
Stakeholders pointed to several barriers to growth and competitiveness, including:
- Infrastructure constraints
- Limited hospitality and business amenities
- Workforce attraction challenges
- Regulatory complexity
- Fragmented coordination among the many organizations supporting local businesses
The Solution
Camoin Associates partnered with the MacArthur Business Alliance, Town of Islip Industrial Development Agency, and Suffolk County Economic Development Corporation to quantify the economic significance of the District and develop a strategic roadmap for its future growth.
The team combined stakeholder engagement, business survey findings, existing conditions assessment, market research, and an economic contribution analysis to assess the District’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities. These informed a four-part action plan for the district.
The Impact
The Economic Contribution Analysis and Action Plan anchored a public kickoff event and equipped the MacArthur Business Alliance with data-driven findings to communicate the District’s value to businesses, developers, policymakers, and investors.
The study helped align public and private stakeholders around a shared vision for growth and provided a strategic framework to guide future investment, business attraction, and infrastructure initiatives.
