Last month, at the 2024 International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference in Denver, CO, I had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion on metrics in entrepreneurship-led economic development alongside Kristi Smith of YourEconomy.org and Dale Hendon of What’s Next Strategies.
Together we explored the evolving landscape of entrepreneurship-led economic development and the need for new metrics to measure its impact effectively. We reflected on how typical metrics focus on job creation and revenue growth, overlooking critical factors like innovation, community engagement, and social impact.
During the session, we made the case for how redefining success metrics can better capture entrepreneurship’s true value in driving economic growth and resilience. We also offered insights into designing and implementing metrics that align with entrepreneurship’s diverse and dynamic nature, ensuring more comprehensive and impactful economic development strategies.
